Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included little previously unseen data.
